Dynamic Positioning (DP) is the system that holds a ship on a fixed point without anchoring, using computers and thrusters. Offshore work is impossible without DPOs, and they are paid well above the market. Here is how to get in.
An officer who runs the ship in DP mode: platform supply (PSV), anchor handling (AHTS), pipe-laying, construction and drilling vessels. A mistake next to a platform is extremely costly, so the requirements are high.
The route usually is:
1. Induction course — the introductory DP course.
2. DP sea time — logging hours and entries in a DP logbook under supervision.
3. Simulator/Advanced course — the advanced simulator course.
4. More sea time and issuance of the certificate (Limited, then Unlimited).
You need a valid watch officer CoC as a base — DP is built on top of an officer qualification.
DP courses are a noticeable investment, plus the time to build DP sea service. The full path from Induction to Unlimited usually takes a year or more, depending on how fast you log hours.
DPO, and especially SDPO, is one of the best-paid segments. Rotations are often shorter than the merchant fleet (frequently 4/4 or 5/5 weeks) and rates are higher. The market depends on offshore activity, but good DPOs are always in short supply.
