First time in the engine room: how a young engineer (4th/3rd Engineer) can survive their first contract

Hey, grease monkeys! This one's for our engine room crew, especially for cadet engineers and those who just got their first working diploma. Panic before your first descent into the engine room is normal: everything's rattling, whistling, tons of pipes and valves everywhere.

The golden rule for newcomers: if you don't know what it does—don't touch it. And if you do touch it—remember what position it was in! Your watch (fuel separators and oil separators, auxiliary boiler, freshwater generator, sewage treatment unit, pumps)—that's your zone of responsibility. Learn to turn bolts with your hands, not stand around with a checklist. Every morning—walkthrough: oil levels in compressor crankcases, shaft seals, filter pressures. And for God's sake, don't discharge bilge water overboard without the Second Engineer's say-so and the OWS switched on—that's a massive fine for the company and real jail time.

Guys, let's support the young blood: what mistake during your first watch was the most memorable?
