PSC Inspection (Port State Control): How to Survive a Check and Not Put Your Ship at Risk

Hey officers and crew! Port State Control (PSC) inspection is always an exam for a vessel. Inspectors (especially strict ones in Europe — Paris MOU, or in Australia — AMSA) start digging deep.

Note for newcomers: an inspector immediately senses the overall atmosphere on board. Deck order, properly stowed mooring lines, clean compartments, crew in proper protective equipment (PPE) — the attitude will be more lenient. If they ask you a question about your equipment (how to start an emergency fire pump, launch a lifeboat) — don't panic, demonstrate clearly. The main thing — don't lie: if you don't know, say you'll check with the responsible officer.

What "tricky" questions have PSC inspectors asked you?
