Hey, oil-stained crew! This one's for our engine room brothers, especially for cadet engineers and those who just got their first working diploma. Panicking before your first descent into the engine room is normal: everything's rattling, whistling, tons of pipes and valves everywhere.
The golden rule for newbies: if you don't know what it does, don't touch it. And if you do touch it, remember what position it was in! Your responsibility (fuel and lube oil separators, auxiliary boiler, water maker, sewage system, pumps) — that's your zone. Learn to turn bolts by hand instead of just standing around with a checklist. Every morning — walk the rounds: oil levels in compressor sumps, shaft seals, filter pressure gauges. And for God's sake, never dump bilge water overboard without the Second Engineer's say-so and the OWS (Oily Water Separator) running — that's a massive fine for the company and real jail time.
Guys, let's support the young blood: what was the most memorable mistake you made on your first tour of duty?
