Great! This topic is relevant for young cadets, ordinary seamen (OS/AB), and engine room ratings. You've completed your contract, got your working diploma, but the crewing company won't promote you because "you lack experience." To advance, you need a promotion recommendation from the captain or chief officer aboard the vessel.
How do you earn it? Simply doing your job from 8 to 5 isn't enough. Show initiative. If you're an ordinary seaman and want to become a 3rd Officer — go to the bridge during your off-watch hours, learn to work with charts, corrections, ECDIS, help the chief officer with paperwork on your own time. Officers see this, and a competent chief will have no problem signing a recommendation for a capable rating.
What experience do you have with starting in a new position? How long did it take you to secure your first officer contract?
