Hey, seafarers! A contract isn't just about watch rotations—it's 4–6 months of living in an enclosed space with the same people. If your free time is limited to a cycle of "watch — galley — bunk with phone," depression will kick in after two months.
First, make your cabin cozy—it's your only personal sanctuary during the contract: familiar home clothes, your favorite mug, family photos. Second, exercise is your salvation: ship food makes it easy to gain 10–15 kg per voyage, so hit the gym even if there's only a rusty barbell and an old treadmill—physical activity burns cortisol. Third, socialize: table tennis tournaments, PlayStation on weekends, barbecues on deck (if safety permits). Team spirit really does make contracts more bearable.
What do you do in your free time? Learn languages, read, lift weights, or sleep for days? What's the coolest recreation area you've had on your ships?
