PSC Inspection (Port State Control): How to Survive a Check and Not Get Your Ship Detained

Hello, officers and crew! A port state control (PSC) inspection is always an exam for the vessel. Inspectors (especially tough ones in Europe — Paris MOU, or in Australia — AMSA) start digging in.

A tip for newcomers: an inspector immediately senses the overall atmosphere on board. Order on deck, neatly coiled mooring lines, clean spaces, crew in proper PPE (personal protective equipment) — the attitude will be more lenient. If asked about your equipment (how to start the emergency fire pump, launch the lifeboat) — don't panic, demonstrate clearly. The main thing is not to lie: if you don't know, say you'll check with the responsible officer.

What "tricky" questions have PSC inspectors asked you?
