Hey deckhands and engineers! Got a job on a container ship — get ready for the maritime railroad. The container fleet is the most punctual segment: ports are scheduled months in advance, and even a one-hour delay can cost the company millions in penalties.
The main headache for sailors and officers is lashing control. Enormous boxes stand on deck in 7–9 tiers and are secured with steel rods (lashing rods) and turnbuckles. Before departure, the officer must check every single rod: if even one turnbuckle loosens in a storm — it's a domino effect, and containers tumble overboard. For the engine room, a container ship is an endless race at maximum RPM: the main engines are gigantic and must deliver maximum power to make the time slot. Port stays are short, romance is nonexistent, but the experience is massive.
Who prefers working on "boxes" and why? What are the maximum sizes of container ships you've worked on?
