Ukraine Cripples Kerch Ferry Hub, Throwing Russian Military Fuel Logistics into Chaos

22 June 2026

The critical Russian logistical artery across the Kerch Strait has ground to a halt following a targeted Ukrainian drone offensive. By successfully disabling the ferry transit system, Kyiv has forced the Russian military to redirect its heavy supply convoys onto the highly vulnerable Mariupol-Melitopol highway—putting vital military assets directly into the crosshairs of ongoing Ukrainian drone strikes.
The coordinated operation unfolded overnight on Saturday. Ukrainian drone units executed precision strikes on the port infrastructure in Kerch, successfully obliterating most of the fuel storage tanks at the marine terminal. Simultaneously, retaliatory blazes erupted across the strait at the Kavkaz terminal, compounding the damage to the transit network.
The assault also severely crippled the region's maritime fleet. Among the casualties was the Elena II, a commercial rail-ferry acquired by the Russian state enterprise Rosmorport from Greece back in 2024. Having served the Kerch Strait route since mid-2025, its removal from service deals a major blow to the Kremlin's regional transport capacity.
While Moscow still has the adjacent Kerch Strait Bridge at its disposal—a massive road and rail structure—the military remains highly hesitant to use this prestigious geopolitical symbol for transporting volatile cargo like ammunition and fuel. This caution stems from bitter experience: Ukraine has previously demonstrated an ability to turn secondary explosions into devastating structural damage. A prime example is the 2022 attack, where burning fuel railcars severely compromised the rail span, forcing authorities to lower its maximum weight limit as a permanent precaution. Ever since, Russia has deliberately kept hazardous military cargo off the bridge, relying entirely on the now-disabled ferries.
With the ferry system down, the alternative overland route—the R-280 highway—offers little relief. Not only are supply trucks on this route sitting ducks for drone strikes, but systematic Ukrainian attacks on bridges near the Crimean border have already created massive bottlenecks.
The consequences of this logistical chokehold are already being felt on the ground. Fuel supplies across the Crimean peninsula are drying up rapidly. In response to the growing shortage, Russian authorities officially introduced strict rationing measures on Sunday, completely cutting off public access to fuel and reserving all remaining stocks strictly for military and government vehicles.
